TSP distribution or withdrawal happens in 4 different methods.Â
- Partial Distribution – The account holder must withdraw a minimum of $1000 from their TSP account.Â
- Complete Distribution – Withdrawing the entire amount present in the TSP account.Â
- Annuity Purchase – Purchase annuities with TSP funds for lifetime coverage. This is a one-time payment for annuities where the federal employee gets monthly payments for their lifetime.
- Installments – A monthly, quarterly, or half-yearly plan to withdraw money from the TSP account.
Different TSP rollover methods are –

- In-Kind Transfer – This type of transfer is applicable for switching your investments from one employer to another without any tax penalties.Â
- Set Up IRAs Before Rollover – Choose the type of IRA account and appoint beneficiaries before rolling over a TSP account. Your employer can directly transfer funds to the new account or offer a cheque to deposit into the new employer’s plan. Â
- Liquidation of Individual Funds – Closing down different types of TSP funds and liquidating the amount to invest in the rollover account.Â
The 2 Types of Rollover are –Â Â
- Direct Rollover – Broker to Broker
- Indirect Rollover – TSP to person

- TSP G Fund – Government securities funds

Some of the noteworthy plans to achieve your retirement milestones are –Â
- Federal Employees Group Life Insurance – This is the biggest life insurance program offered by the US Federal Government applicable to federal employees only.Â
- Thrift Savings Plan – A FERS-based retirement savings plan with several types of funds and income benefits.Â
- Social Security Benefits – A retirement program that compensates with income and disability benefits to federal employees more than 62 years old.Â
- 457(b) – This is a retirement savings plan with tax benefits offering relief from tax during withdrawal.
- Federal Employees Health Benefits – Healthcare compensation plan for federal employees and their families.
The best age to withdraw money from the TSP account is after 59 and a half years.Â
Also, if you have reached the age of 73 years, it is mandatory to withdraw the required minimum distributions from the TSP account. Failure to withdraw money from this account after a certain age results in penalties.Â
Similarly, withdrawing money from the TSP account before the age of 59 and a half years also levies tax penalties.Â
