AFGE Local 554, in collaboration with PWR Retirement Group, invites federal workers to attend a two-day educational workshop focused on understanding federal retirement benefits and preparing for important retirement decisions.

Federal retirement planning involves much more than selecting a retirement date. Employees must consider how their pension, Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), life insurance, survivor benefits, retirement savings, and other available benefits may work together. Without a clear understanding of these areas, it can be difficult to evaluate retirement options and make informed choices about the future.

This workshop is designed to provide practical, easy-to-understand education about the key components of federal retirement planning. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about their benefits, identify important planning considerations, and prepare more meaningful questions before making retirement-related decisions.

The event is open to all federal workers, whether retirement is approaching soon or is still several years away.

What You Will Learn

During the workshop, attendees will receive educational guidance on several important areas of federal retirement planning, including:

  1. Understanding federal retirement benefits
Learn about the primary benefits that may contribute to your financial well-being during retirement and how those benefits can work together as part of a broader retirement strategy.
  2. Identifying the right time to retire
Explore some of the factors federal employees should consider when evaluating a potential retirement date, including age, years of service, benefit eligibility, financial readiness, and personal retirement goals.
  3. Reviewing FERS and CSRS retirement considerations
Gain a clearer understanding of important considerations under the Federal Employees Retirement System and the Civil Service Retirement System. The workshop will help attendees recognize how their retirement system may affect their planning decisions.
  4. Maximizing TSP contributions and retirement savings
Review the role of the Thrift Savings Plan in building retirement savings. Attendees will learn why contribution levels, investment decisions, agency matching, time horizon, and long-term planning can influence retirement preparedness.
  5. Understanding FEGLI and survivor benefit options
Learn about the Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance program and important survivor benefit considerations. The session will highlight questions employees may want to review when considering financial protection for their families and beneficiaries.
  6. Personalized retirement benefit discussions
Attendees will have an opportunity to raise questions and participate in discussions related to their federal retirement benefits, personal goals, and areas of concern.

Who Should Attend?

This educational workshop may be especially helpful for:

  • Federal employees who want a clearer understanding of their benefits
  • Employees who are beginning to plan for retirement
  • Mid-career employees who want to strengthen their retirement strategy
  • Employees approaching retirement eligibility
  • FERS and CSRS participants
  • Employees seeking greater clarity about TSP, FEGLI, and survivor benefits
  • Federal workers who want to prepare informed questions before making retirement decisions

You do not need to be ready to retire to benefit from this workshop. Learning how your benefits work earlier in your career may give you more time to evaluate your options, strengthen your savings, and address potential gaps in your retirement plan.
